Humans can feel a range of emotions. We can be happy, sad, angry, or guilty. But sometimes, we do not feel anything at all. We just feel empty inside. People struggling with depression often say this is how they feel.

It is difficult for the commoner to understand what they mean when they say this, so even if someone is trying to help a friend get out of depression, they don’t know how to. But a therapist can understand such feelings very well.

Therapy can help resolve unsaid emotions that might be causing that empty feeling. But to consider therapy and differentiate whether what you are feeling is normal or you might be struggling with depression, you should learn about the common signs of depression and when considering therapy becomes inevitable.

Feeling Sad Most of the Time

Feeling sad once in a while is normal, but if you feel only this one emotion on most days, then depression might be the reason. Normally, when we feel sad, there is a reason, but for people struggling with depression, sadness stays without any reason. There is a possibility that a reason might exist, but maybe not in the present.

Therefore, therapy for depression is important; the therapist can explore different aspects of a person’s life to understand the exact reason for this sadness and why someone has stopped looking forward to things that once made them feel happy and alive. The therapist then teaches healthy coping mechanisms.

Losing Interest in Things

Some people wonder why they don’t enjoy a specific activity they used to love. Even friends and family notice these changes and question why their loved ones are not enjoying certain activities that they loved before.

Initially, the person struggling tries to make sense of these changes by finding reasons and giving answers to their loved ones.

But when that person finds it difficult to understand why they are not able to enjoy their favorite activities, practice their favorite hobby, play sports, or go out with friends, then talking to a therapist might help. They can help people discover why this is happening and find ways to enjoy and engage in the activities that bring joy.

Struggling to Perform Everyday Tasks

Sometimes the empty feeling inside gets so strong that it hinders normal day-to-day functioning, making it difficult to get out of bed and do the most basic everyday tasks. In this situation, therapy is the only way to understand why you are feeling the way you are feeling and how to get control of your life back.

Feeling Tired Most of the Time

Depression can make you feel tired most of the time. Even if you’re not doing anything, you will feel like your muscles are all tensed up, and you just want to lie down all the time. Even after a full 8 hours of sleep, you will feel tired. Because of this low energy, your grades and work can be affected. This can make you feel frustrated and even more hopeless.

This tiredness could be a reason you’re not able to perform day-to-day tasks and aren’t feeling joy in activities you loved before. But to know the exact reason and get your energy levels back to normal, you would have to talk to a therapist.

Conclusion

Depression can make life feel heavy, but it does not have to stay that way. Some people struggling with depression hesitate to seek help, so friends and family should also look for the signs discussed above and encourage their loved ones to seek therapy. The earlier the therapy begins, the sooner the person will begin to heal.
